Step by step instructions:
1) Pick three behaviors that your dog knows really well and figure out very clear ways to physically demonstrate them to your dog. So for example, the ones I used with Finley & the coresponding cue that I demonstrated to him: paw target (I touch something with my hand), nose target (I touch something with my nose), and wave (I wave my hand).
2) Start with your dog in a sit in front of you & ask them to stay.
3) Demonstrate the first behavior to your dog and ask them to "do it!" If they are confused, say "do it!" followed by the verbal cue you usually use for that particular behavior (example: "Do it, touch!") Mark & reward when they do the behavior.
4) Move on to the next behavior. Avoid repeating the same behavior back to back so as not to confuse your dog on the meaning of the cue "do it!" You want them to generalize the cue to all behaviors, not a specific one.
5) When your dog is able to mimic you with all three behaviors without having to add a separate verbal cue to "do it," move on to three other behaviors.
6) Rinse, repeat, and have fun! us out on social media!
